When styling your naturally curly, kinky and wavy hair you should….

  1. Embrace the natural beauty of you and your natural curls, kinks and waves.   Love how you look and know that it is beautiful!

  2. Know your products and how much to use.  Using too much product can extend drying time, make your curls too dry and stiff or weigh them down.   Not using enough of your  product will cause them to frizz and be puffy. In order to best determine how much of a product to use feel free to contact us here at Urbanbella and ask us!  We have tested majority of the products on the market!

  3.
  4. Keep an arsenal of styling tools ready to go!
This should include a series of combs (i.e. wide-tooth  comb, detangling combs)

Styling products such as DevaCurl Angell for fine to medium textured curly hair and wavy hair and Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding and Miss Jessie’s Curly Meringue for medium to course textured natural hair.

    Spray bottle of water

Detangling leave-in moisturizer or conditioner such as Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner and Curls Quenched Curls Moisturizer.

Clips for pinning the hair in place when working

    Table top hood dryer

Moisturizer for refreshing and pluming up dry curls such as DevaCurl Set-it Free, Jane Carter Solution Hair Nourishing Cream and Curls Milk Shake for fine and medium textured hair. For medium and course textures of hair Miss Jessie’s Curly Buttercream and Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream provide superb moisture and Jane Carter Solution Nourish and Shine provides the highest glossy shine!

    Blow dryer with diffuser attachment

  5. Begin styling with conditioner in. Your hair is softer and more manageable when it is drenched in conditioner and fortunately this makes it easier to move around and keep it smooth and free of frizz. Take advantage of this by styling your hair during this phase. For example, if you are wearing a part further to the right with the weight of your hair going to the left, go ahead and shift it to that position before rinsing out the conditioner. This is one of the tricks that make it easier to style curly hair, kinky hair and wavy hair.

  6. Avoid using a towel if at all possible. Why, you ask? For starters you won’t need it in most cases. If step 4 is followed, your hair will no longer drip water, because the product has already absorbed most of it. In addition, towels soak up moisture that is needed by the product to be most effective in styling your tresses. If you still need to remove excess water, gently squeeze the water out without ringing your hair.

  7. Apply product to dripping wet hair. There are two reasons for this… (1) Your curls, kinks and waves are still in their most perfect state immediately after you rinse conditioner. You want to “freeze-frame” this moment with your styling aids, which are design to hold your hair in place. The second reason to apply product to dripping wet hair is you want the perfect balance between the water in your hair and the “holding agents” in your gels and styling creams. This will eliminate crunchy curls, puffy afro kinks or clumpy waves.

  8. Comb or finger style products through your hair from roots to the ends. This ensures that the product is distributed evenly and removes any additional tangles. This should be done in small sections to define the curl or wave pattern. Styling smaller sections leads to better definition and less frizz.

  9. Don’t touch your curls after styling. Touching curls after they are set causes them to frizz and puff. Just before drying flip your head forward and shake your hair to loosen up your tresses and keep them form sticking together.

  10. Dry with a Diffuser or Tabletop dryer. Both of these tools evenly distribute heat and keep the curls in place while drying. Flip your hair over and diffuse the ends very lightly and create volume.
